Press release, Montreal, Sep 13 2024

The Canadian Muslim Forum (FMC-CMF), a leading advocate for human rights and amongst the first to stand up against islamophobia and hate,  strongly condemns the recent calls for the resignation of Mrs. Amira Elghawaby, Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia of Canada., who has been a dedicated champion in the fight against Islamophobia.

The recent demand for Mrs. Amira Elghawaby’s  resignation is not only premature but also undermines the crucial work being done to address and combat Islamophobia. Mrs.  Elghawaby has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to tackling discrimination through recommendations of actions, policies, or initiatives.  This commitment has been evident in her efforts and work.

It is essential to recognize that addressing Islamophobia and other forms of discrimination is a complex and ongoing process. The calls for resignation ignore the significant progress made and the continuous efforts by Mrs. Elghawaby and civic groups across the country to engage with affected communities, promote understanding, and drive meaningful change.

FMC-CMF believes that effective leadership in combating discrimination requires support and constructive feedback, not calls for dismissal. Our focus should be on fostering a collaborative environment where leaders can continue their important work without the threat of immediate resignation. Mrs. Elghawaby has shown dedication to creating a more inclusive society, and their continued role is vital to advancing this critical mission.

We urge all stakeholders to support leaders who are committed to fighting prejudice and to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to calls for resignation. Let us work together to promote understanding and continue the fight against Islamophobia with a spirit of cooperation and respect.
