Canada Must Take Concrete Action Against Islamophobia on International Day for Combating Islamophobia
March 15, 2025 – Montreal, Qc – On the International Day for Combating Islamophobia, the Canadian Muslim Forum (CMF-FMC) calls on Canada’s decision-makers to take stronger, concrete measures against Islamophobia and all forms of hate. While Canada prides itself on diversity and inclusion, Muslim community across the country continue to face discrimination, violence, and systemic barriers that must be urgently addressed.
From the tragic Quebec City mosque attack to the London, Ontario terror attack, Canada has witnessed the devastating consequences of anti-Muslim hate. These acts of violence are not isolated incidents but part of a broader pattern of Islamophobia that requires immediate and sustained action from policymakers at all levels. It is no longer enough to condemn these acts with words, real action is needed to ensure the safety and dignity of Muslim Canadians.
The Canadian Muslim Forum has been at the forefront of combating Islamophobia through advocacy, education, and community engagement. CMF continues to work tirelessly to push for stronger legal protections, better reporting mechanisms for hate crimes, and greater government accountability in addressing Islamophobia. However, this fight cannot be won alone. The federal and provincial governments must implement policies that go beyond symbolic gestures, including:
-
Strengthening anti-hate laws to ensure harsher penalties for Islamophobic violence and hate speech.
-
Increasing funding for security measures at mosques and Islamic centers.
-
Improving education on Islamophobia in schools and workplaces.
-
Ensuring that government institutions are free from systemic discrimination and bias.
On this day, the Canadian Muslim Forum urges all Canadians, especially policymakers, to move beyond rhetoric and take meaningful steps to eradicate Islamophobia. Canada must lead by example in ensuring that every citizen, regardless of faith, can live free from fear and discrimination.
