CMF Calls on Yves Francoeur to Retract and Apologize for Comments on Muslims
– For Immediate Release –
(Montreal, Canada – Dec 24, 2014) The Canadian Muslim Forum (CMF) today called for Montreal police brotherhood chief Yves Francoeur to retract and apologize for his comments about Montreal’s Muslim community.
Yves Francoeur said, “Police officers are not immune to the possibility of attacks because of the ‘multi-ethnic’ character of Montreal.” When Mr. Francoeur was asked clarify his statements, his response was that because there are more mosques in the territory, there are more extremists. Mr. Francoeur added the police have good cooperation with the Muslim community.
Recent cases have shown that radicalization is happening online and on social media, and is not in any way linked to mosques.
“Yves Francoeur’s comments are inaccurate and promote Islamophobia, or an irrational fear of Muslims. In no way, shape or form can they be tolerated,” said Samer Majzoub, CMF President.
“Mr. Francoeur must issue an immediate retraction and apologize to the Muslim community, and all Montrealers, for his remarks,” Majzoub, added.
In response to Yves Francoeur’s comments, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre twetted, the city’s “diversity and multicultural character is an added value” and “not a threat for our safety.” He stated that Mr. Francoeur “needs to clarify his thought.”
