Montreal, January 25, 2025 –

The Canadian Muslim Forum (CMF-CMF) welcomes the recent statement by Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante on January 20, 2025, marking the 8th anniversary of the tragic massacre at the Grand Mosque of Quebec City. In her statement, Mayor Plante reaffirmed the city’s commitment to combating Islamophobia and all forms of hatred.

The FMC expresses its deep appreciation for the Mayor’s words and for the recognition of the presence of the FMC delegation at the municipal meeting. At a time when incidents of Islamophobia, harassment and bullying are on the rise, the Mayor’s statement embodies a true spirit of leadership, inclusion and unity, which characterizes Montreal.

“We thank Mayor Plante for her leadership and ongoing commitment to a diverse and inclusive community,” said a FMC spokesperson. “This statement demonstrates Montreal’s commitment to supporting the Muslim community and combating Islamophobia in all its forms.”

The FMC also expresses its gratitude to the district mayors and municipal councilors of all political persuasions who have made similar statements, thus demonstrating their solidarity with the Muslim community and their opposition to Islamophobia.

While the 8th anniversary of the Quebec City mosque massacre is a painful reminder of the lives lost, including the 17 orphans left behind, it is also an opportunity to honour the resilience and unity of those who stand together against Islamophobia, hatred and bigotry. The CMF honours the collective spirit of those working to build a more just and inclusive society.

The Canadian Muslim Forum remains fully committed to promoting mutual understanding, creating harmony and relentlessly combating all forms of hatred and discrimination.
