Shocking and Unbelievable: Continued Targeting of Quebecers Based on Their Backgrounds
Premier François Legault’s recent comments in the National Assembly, particularly regarding the ban on prayers in public places, are deeply troubling. These remarks add to a pattern of political rhetoric that unfairly targets Quebecers, especially those of Muslim faith, based solely on their backgrounds.
Every day seems to bring new instances of discrimination against Quebecers who practice Islam. This troubling trend suggests that some politicians view these citizens as second-class, undeserving of the same rights and respect as others.
Even more alarming is, again, the government’s proposed use of the “notwithstanding clause” to override fundamental rights guaranteed in the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, including freedoms of conscience, religion, opinion, expression, and assembly. This would strip away protections meant to safeguard all Quebecers.
Divisive political actions do not benefit Quebec’s diverse & rich society. Instead, they isolate communities, fuel hate, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, and foster intolerance.
Quebec is, and must remain, an inclusive society that values and celebrates its diversity. We call on the CAQ government to respect the dignity of all Quebecers, regardless of their religious or cultural backgrounds, and to uphold the values of equality, mutual respect, and human rights.
In these challenging times, we urge the government to lead with compassion and protect the fundamental freedoms that define our society.
